HOMETOWN: Manhattan, New York

Ismael Otero is an immensely popular salsa/mambo instructor, performer and choreographer in the latin dance scene.  He was born in New York, but moved to Jersey City, New Jersey at a young age.  He began taking dance classes in 1994 thanks to his mothers influence.  Otero learned quickly and was soon getting requests from other friends and dancers to teach them salsa.  He was a dance assistant with Luis Delgado for about a year, and then he began to teach his own classes. Otero’s salsa dance style is filled with urban flavor, improv, and an air of confidence.

His improvisational and unique style, and flair have earned him the nickname “The Million Moves Man” (given by Edie “The Salsa Freak”).  He admits that sometimes his performances are improvised, and that finding the right music is what’s important when performing. Otero’s confidence doesn’t translate into cockiness when not dancing, and he is known for being one of the more humble “Salsa All-Stars”.  Ismael founded Caribbean Soul Dance School in 1997, and the company has traveled around the world performing.
